Hot Girl Summer has finally arrived. There are millennia of ideas for what to do during the hottest season of the year, and nothing better can hype you up for the excitement than the best music. So, without further ado, here are the first 10 songs that are vital to my summer.
Love Shhh! - Jo Yuri
As the title track of Jo Yuri’s second album as a soloist, ‘Op. 22 Y-Waltz: in Major’, the song brings explosive energy to start off the perfect summer playlist. The dynamic guitar and bright pop-rock come together to create the perfect chemistry for a DIY carpool-karaoke with friends on a road trip, or at night for a summer pool party. Although the lyrics are not written in English, you can’t help but listen in and dream about summer vacation plans and meeting up with friends after a long year of academic turmoil.
2. Alcohol-Free - TWICE
The summer queens never disappoint. The 9-member girl group has consistently released masterful summer pieces like ‘Dance the Night Away and ‘More and More’; Alcohol-Free has proven itself to be just as refreshing, if not more colorful. Despite the song’s name, the fusion between the unique bossa-nova sound and hip-hop beat brings about music that will easily have listeners and fans alike addicted and drunk(I’m not an addict I swear) to the song. With many references to alcoholic refreshments and beverages like margaritas and tequilas, the lyrics compare the addictive drinks to how they have helplessly fallen in love.
3. Blue Lemonade - Red Velvet
“A cup filled with the sweet scent of an ocean”. Like the enticing lyrics, the song will leave listeners wondering what exactly a blue lemonade tastes like. As one of the b-side tracks in the mini-album ‘Summer Magic’, the song is a true gem in the collection, with a mixture of beautiful vocals and addictive synth-pop sounds. As an avid fan of all of Red Velvet’s b-side tracks, this one is definitely my favorite, hitting summer right in the spot.
4. Summer is For Falling in Love - Sarah Kang
I like to define this song as one of my main character anthems. I can quite literally picture myself resting on a verdant, open field under the shade of an old peppermint tree. Beyond the cliff of the field would be an ocean, sweeping up the breezes and lifting them to me, feeling the comforts of the summer. Aside from my extensive fantasies about my summer vacation, there is something comforting in the minimalistic guitar sounds, and an open chorus, indulging listeners in a daydreaming state. Sarah Kang’s unique voice brings a new color to the song as well; this piece is most definitely essential to be placed on your playlist.
5. Dive with you(feat. eaJ) - Seori
Seori’s ‘Dive with you’ is true to its title, with an unexpectedly explosive element in the chorus of the title — it truly makes listeners want to dive into the summer. Seori’s distinctive vocals add to the uniqueness of the song, delivering a message about freedom and sprinting away from the suffocating ropes of society. The addition of eaJ, the former main vocalist of the band Day6, created an incredibly refreshing sound that is perfect for a melancholy yet exhilarating summer. I can absolutely imagine myself listening to this in the car on a summer night, with the window open, letting the wind flow across my face freely.
Anyway, that’s it for today, folks.
Until next time!
