Today I’m going to take a look at the main stories of 3 of the units in “Project Sekai: Colorful Stage!” (aka ProSeka). Why? Because I have no idea what else to write, I literally just wrote something 2 weeks ago. Also, reviewing all the main stories in a few days is too little time for me, so I’ll be splitting this up into two separate articles. Very wonderful. Anyways, I’ll be writing down my thoughts regarding each main story, both its positive points and negative points. After I review all 5 stories, I’ll rank all the stories from my favorite to my least favorite. FYI, there WILL be main story spoilers. You have been warned. (Please do read each story before reading this, it’ll probably be a better experience if you’re read them all first.)
First off, Leo/need! This unit is made of four childhood friends who eventually grew apart in middle school. However, with the help of Miku and Luka, the four of them create a band.
Positive points:
The fact that all of them held onto their common dream of forming a band together was really sweet. Even though Honami and Shiho rejected at first for their own separate reasons, I like how eventually, Saki and Ichika got them to notice their true feelings.
I liked Honami’s unique storyline. I think it’s realistic that some people will cave in to please their bullies, but it isn’t commonly shown in shows, games, etc.
The reason their unit name is Leo/need is so cute??? (named after Leonids, the meteor shower they saw as children, “need” because they need each other, and the slash represents a shooting star)
Negative points:
This is probably me being nitpicky, but Ichika never really got a proper apology out of Shiho and Honami… Just saying. I think Ichika deserves one after what happened in middle school.
Saki kind of feels… really uninvolved with their middle school business. Yes, I’m aware she was sick, but I feel like this could have been better handled if a few hospital visits were shown in flashbacks, and shown her noticing some differences between her friends.
Next up is MORE MORE JUMP! It’s a unit made up of three retired idols, with each one leaving the industry due to certain issues, and one aspiring idol. The aspiring idol, Minori, eventually gives hope to all the others, and they form their unit together, with their focus being holding livestreams.
Positive points:
I like how, unlike some other idol games, they showcased some of the darker parts of the industry. Jealousy between fellow group and agency members, not being able to do many idol activities due to being better fit for other activities, and guilt for pushing someone else too hard. Idols may appear to be all bright and sunshiny on the surface, but in reality their lives could be the complete opposite.
Minori’s perseverance is astounding and is what brought their whole group together in the first place. I think it shows how a little bit of hope can go a long way.
Negative points:
Minori’s character, while astounding, truly feels a bit unrealistic. I know it’s because she really, REALLY wanted to be like Haruka, but 50 failed auditions?! Really????
Once again, Minori feels a bit uninvolved with the whole backstory of the others. I know that it was inevitable, with someone who wasn’t part of the idol industry, but I do feel like she doesn’t exactly have much reason to involve herself in helping the other three resolve their problems.
In summary, Minori just feels like a character who is too perfectly positive, and has nearly no flaws from these 20 chapters. Well, I guess that’s what event stories are for, building more onto characters who didn’t get their share during the main story.
Finally, the last group I’ll review in this article is Vivid BAD SQUAD. They’re a group who wants to surpass the legendary RAD WEEKEND, which was a famous and very successful street event.
Positive points:
I really liked seeing Kohane’s character development! Her facing her fears was very nice, and I like how her new appearance reflected it too. I’m glad she bounced back after her initial failure at her first live (though that was kinda audio-cutting guy’s fault, not hers)
I liked how dedicated Akito and An were on the topic of surpassing RAD WEEKEND. It was nice seeing how the event was truly that great, and that it left such a strong impression on them that they’re still dedicated to surpassing it even now. It really sells the point that to them, RAD WEEKEND was the greatest street event that ever happened
Negative points:
This is a side effect of the fact that this group is made out of two duos, but the two halves of the story feel kind of separate. Yes, they’re technically the same unit, but it feels more like one half mainly centers around the Vivids (Kohane and An), while the other half mainly centers around BAD DOGS (Akito and Touya), while the non-centric characters feel more like… backdrop, supporting characters.
Once again, another side effect of them being two duos at first, but I feel like them joining together into one unit feels a bit rushed…??? There’s only really development between the Vivids and BAD DOGS, and basically no development between members from different duos. It just feels kind of off, especially when compared to all the other units.
Random dude’s cutting of the audio during the Vivids’ first performance was a stupid move. Seriously? That’s just sabotage, and for what?? Yeah, ok, you thought An wasn’t actually talented or anything, but maybe you could’ve ACTUALLY watched her perform before trying to cut the audio???????
And that’s my review of the main stories of Leo/need, MORE MORE JUMP! and Vivid BAD SQUAD~ Thank you for reading! See you in my second part, in which I’ll review the main stories of Wonderlands x Showtime and Nightcord at 25:00.
